Ken's Bio
Ken's Bio
Ken Cheeks is a retired master teacher and contemporary saxophonists. He served 7 years as a music instructor at Benedict College, Columbia, SC, followed by 27 years as an award winning Band Director at Alcorn Middle School, Richland School District One, Columbia South Carolina. He graduated from South Carolina State College in 1972 with a B.S. in Music Education and a Master of Music Education in 1981 from Norfolk State University.
Ken has performed throughout the southeast tri-state areas. Relocating to Columbia South Carolina in 1981, he formed the Sunrise Jazz Ensemble with pianist Ron Boozer. During the mid eighties and nineties this popular jazz group shared the stage with legends like pianist Ramsey Lewis, jazz vocalist Betty Carter, saxophonist Stanley Turrentine and George Howard.
Since retiring from public school teaching in May of 2014, he continues his passion for education as a National Trainer with the Center for Teacher Effectiveness, specializing in classroom management. Additionally, he continues to teach instrumental music privately and performs as a solo artists and bandleader providing musical services that sets just the right mood for your special occasion. In the Spring of 2018, Ken release a new solo CD entitled "Song In The Key of Praise"
